1. ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
You never know who used a gun before you, and they may not have followed protocol

2. NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
this on is pretty self explanatory!

3. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON TARGET
a safety protocol follwed by SWAT, preventing accidental discharge in an unsafe direction (I also learnt this one the hard way at paintball using a friends tournament marker... hair triggers are fun...)

4. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET
bullets have a habit of travelling much further than your intended target... be sure of a safe backstop for the bullet, or that no unintended targets are behind yours

Thats at least what iv learnt while shooting at various objects... just found the OFFICIAL ones somewhere...

We've always been told 3, plus a couple of others specific to clay shooting.

Another fun one is "always check the safety is off before you go to pull the trigger" - more important for Shotguns I guess, but it is a b**** when you go to shoot something, pull the trigger and nothing happens... you lose the element of surprise and time just moving you thumb to the switch, plus if you have to lower the gun to change it, you lose your target...

...

I like guns

Another rule you need to keep in mind is always keeping the safety ON unless ordered/allowed otherwise.

@ Faith: Clay pidgeon shooting is something i wanna do again. The last/first time i went i must have been 12. serious. the gun weighed more than me almost (probably still would) 'twas an over/under... i got 2 outta 8 though... i'm more into range shooting myself... pretty crack with a .22

@ G.I.U.L.I.O.: as far as i recall the rule with the safety is that its on until your in the operational area. thereafter, like Jewel says, you'd better have it off... you don't get a second chance in the field...
